The H-43 Huskie was first purchased by the US Air Force in 1958. In 1962 an upgraded variant arrived designated the HH-43 as a result of the aircraft’s new rescue role. From first glance… and second… the Huskie has a very unique appearance with its intermeshing rotor design. This new design eliminated the need for a traditional tailor that is found on almost all helicopters even in modern times. HH-43 Huskie arrived in Vietnam in 1964 as the only dedicated USAF rescue helicopter until late 1965 being joined by the Jolly Green. The Huskie was generally crewed by two pilots, one crew chief and a PJ. Equipped with a hoist and litter the PJ was lowered down to awaiting wounded or downed pilots and lifted up through the canopy. Being deployed in one minute or less after receiving a call the Huskie would be credited with more saves than any other helicopter type during the war and was the last dedicated rescue helicopter to leave Vietnam.

Recognition - The Huskie’s most notable moment was on April 11th 1966 when a rescue mission that included PJ Airmen 1st Class William H. Pitsenbarger. His actions on that fateful day would earn him the Medal of Honor. A life size statue stands tall in Piqua Ohio in his memory. These Things We Do, That Others May Live - PJ Motto
