The Loach began its military life as a submission for the US Army LOH (Light Observation Helicopter) program. Successfully obtaining 714 orders with the first batch arriving in Vietnam in 1966. The US Army came back again for more aircraft with a total of 1,434 produced. The Loach orders were halted when the Army reopened the competition for a LOH with a new winner. The Loach was successfully used throughout the Vietnam conflict as a scout and gun platform. Flying extremely low to the ground the pilot and crew scanned for targets reporting to the orbiting gunships above. The Loach was designed not only for agility but survivability. During an impact incident the main rotor blades, skids, and tail boom were designed to break away leaving a clean egg shape structure. Pilots and crew that operated the Loach during Vietnam continue to share their amazing first hand accounts of the platform’s ability and versatility.
